Faculty of Engineering of Osaka University was founded as the State Osaka
Engineering School by the government and Osaka Prefecture in 1896. It was
then incorporated into Osaka Imperial University in 1933 which became the
cornerstone of today's Faculty of Engineering of Osaka University. The
faculty has a history of more than a hundred years, and has sent a lot
of students into the society who are now playing a leading role in the
various fields of academy and commerce in and out of the country. We are
proud of having a reputation for being the first-class university in Japan.
Excellent education staff are working with enthusiasm and are making contributions
to society, which is the very principle of Osaka University, "Live locally
and grow globally".
20th century observed a significant development in scientific technology
and a remarkable growth in economy, and it is the outstanding innovation
in technology which realized this economic growth . On the other hand,
social problems such as environmental pollution, global warming and depletion
of resource which threaten the sustainable development of human society,
have started to emerge. What becomes important in 21st century is to build
up sustainable society through development in technology. In order to harmonize
nature and human beings, and to contribute to the creation of safe society
along with the human wealth, we, as Graduate school of Engineering, aim
to "produce, raise, and transmit wisdom" and contribute to society based
on the excellent wisdom.

Our hope is that most graduated students go on to postgraduate school and
that they learn to become creative at highly advanced level. For our hope
to come true, we reformed the education system from faculty - oriented
to post-graduate oriented from 1995 to 1998.
In 2005, 24 departments were reduced to 10 to form a flexible education
and research framework to meet students' needs. Also in 2006, Environment-energy
field will be detached from major departments and 5 departments (12 majors)
including Applied Nature Science, Applied Science Engineering, Electronic
Information Engineering, Environment-Energy Engineering and Global Architecture
will be established.
Engineering department supports those who are willing to become creative,
and we aim to cultivate those who will contribute to the human happiness
by making a full use of what they have learnt. As a research based university,
we are making every effort to provide the students with advanced professional
knowledge and help them become successful in their career.
It takes every effort to make dream come true or pave the way for the future,
and there may be some hurdles ahead. If you are determined, however, you
will achieve your goals, and we are always here and happy to help you get
through.
